Biological Noise and Possible Uses

The purpose of this research is to investigate whether there is room for noise in synthetic biology. Normally, synthetic biology research adopts the digital perspective of computer science and engineering, attempting to construct systems that have a well-controlled predictable output. However, biological systems tend to have some level of noise, or stochastic behaviour such that each cell does not produce the same amount of output in the same amount of time as all other cells. Here, our goal is to learn what is known in the field of noise and stochastic behaviour at the molecular level, and try to find a way to use noise as an integral part of a synthetic design.
