Figure 2. Function of the AND gate.

A. Fluorescence was measured for 64 combinations of inducers (Ara and Sal) in a fluorimeter. A steep transition between the ON and OFF states indicates near-digital AND gate function.

B. Flow cytometry was used to measure the fluorescence in individual cells, and determine behavior of the cell population. While adding each inducer alone produced fluorescence levels comparable to those in cells lacking inducer, the addition of both Sal and Ara resulted in 1000-fold induction (note the log scale).
