Haloferax mediterranei

Haloferax mediterranei is a denitrifying halophile of the domain Archaea, found in the Mediterranean Sea. Using nitrite, this organism is able to grow with nitrogen as the sole source for growth, via an assimilation process under anaerobic conditions. In respiratory processes, this halophile is also able to reduce nitrite--nitrite is the electron acceptor or reducing agent when oxygen is limited.
