Stochasticity in gene expression influences the construction of parts, to devices, to systems in synthetic biology. While it stands as a goal, for synthetic biologists, to create libraries of standarized parts and devices, inherent stochasticity will always be a factor that needs to be accounted for. Unlike electrical circuits, building synthetic constructs means struggling to characterize and utilize the stochastic nature of the genome, transcriptome and proteome.
